JoLyn Gillie, PE
Geotechnical Engineer | Principal
JoLyn is one of the 3 major Principal Owners of HWA and with over 18 years of experience in geotechnical engineering, JoLyn is HWA’s seismic expert. She spends her time helping clients and mentoring colleagues with various projects including bridge replacements, roadway widening, transfer stations, marine and waterfront structures, and sewer and wastewater treatment structures. Her experience includes developing field exploration programs for geotechnical design, performing detailed geotechnical engineering analyses, and providing geotechnical design recommendations as they relate to the challenges of each project.
JoLyn has served as an affiliate professor for the University of Washington geotechnical case history courses since 2018. She was also a teacher’s assistant for the Introduction to Transportation course at Washington State University while getting her Master’s in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in geotechnical engineering. During her time as a graduate student, she researched the effects of seismic, near fault ground motions on buildings. She evaluated potential design methodologies to implement in building codes that would account for the devastating effects near fault motions can have on structures. Her work was published in Engineering Structures in 2010.
In addition, JoLyn is an active member in WTS (Women in Transportation). From 2016 to 2019 she served as a chair for the mentoring committee where she promoted women engineers within the industry by helping them to secure mentors, sponsorship, education and training opportunities.
